HONIKIWI.

Another social and dance took place in the schoolroom on Saturday, a large attendance, and a enjoyable evening was spent. Th the absence of singers, Mr Forbes' graphaphonc was well appreciated. The school children sang " Home, Sweet Home" and " Hard Times come again no more.'' Recitations were given by Misses C. and A. Budden, and by Master D. West._ __ The dance music was provided by Messrs Kobe and Purhanton (accordion and violin) and Mr Rattray proved an efficient M.C. The school is becoming the centre round which the social life of the district revolves, and already it is found to be on the small side when Maori and Pakeha fraternise. The proceeds from the social were only about half those of the previous month. The roads hereabouts are beginning to take on quite a wintery aspect. One satisfactory feature, however, is the sight of the timber 011 the ground ready to build new bridges over three of the streams crossed by the main road to Otoro'nanga. -.lost of the settlers have been busy sowing -grass seed on the extensive burns of last summer. Mr How, of Oamaru, has got an engine through from Pirongia, which he intends using for sawmilling pur- . poses. It must have been a most expensive undertaking to get so large an engine through as the road in many places had to be repaired or made. The perseverance and ingenuity needed to accomplish the feat \ is a credit to all concerned, and all must wish Mr How success.
