VOLUNTEER NOTES.
An application has been forwarded to the Defence Office for the formation of a Mounted Rifles Squadron of 70 men in the King Country, to be called the Maniapoto Mounted Rifles. The head-quarters of the proposed squadron will be at Te Kuiti, with troops at Otorohanga and Piopio. If accepted this squadron will form part of the 2nd regiment, which goes into camp on the 7th June, at Te Rapa. We understand that a movement is on foot to start a cadet corps at the Te Kuiti Public School. Last week Sergt.-Major Coleman inspected the Awakino Rifle Club, when a parade, at which some seventeen men turned out, was held. The men were instructed in musketry, and during the afternoon shooting on the range was indulged in. Mr Iredale has presented a gold medal to the Club, and for anyone to become the proud possessor of it, must win it twice in succession, or three times at intervals. During Sergt.-Major Coleman's trip through the King Country, he visited the Ohura Rifle Club, and held a parade. There was a good muster present, and the men all seem very enthusiastic. The range was inspected by the Sergt.-Major, who reports very favourably as to its safety.
