MANGAROA.

The opening of the Ohura rifle range, on Mr D. Bruce's property, took place recently, when there was a good attendance, including a large number of ladies, together with visitors from outside districts. Prominent among the latter were Mr and Mrs Julian, and Mr J. Ormsby (Te Kuiti), Mr and Mrs Hyde (Matiere), all of whom rendered welcome assistance. The opening of the range was conducted by Mr Loveday, and after the initial details, Mrs Loveday fired the first shot, registering an unmistakeable bull's-eye. A match between married and single was brought off, the benedicts registering a meritorious win. Some of the shootists showed exceptionally good form for beginners, and the future of the Club is highly promising. It was intended to hold a ladies' match the same afternoon, but time did not permit, and the contest was postponed until a date to be arranged. The range has been inspected by Sergeant-Major Coleman, who is highly pleased with it, and classes it among the finest in the district. It is intended to effect several improvements, including" the installing of a telephone from the firing points to the trench. The cost will be small, and the benefit great. The membership of the Club is now over forty, and there will be over twenty new rifles purchased outright from the Government to start with. The energetic secretary, Mr Woof, is deserving of great credit for the manner in which he has devoted himself to the work of organising the Club. In the evening after the opening ceremony a concert and dance was held in the hall, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The programme was attractive and varied, and the thanks of the community are due to the visitors who assisted towards the evening's enjoyment. Mrs Hyde, of Matiere, kindly played the accompaniments and dance music, and is deserving of special mention. _ The following songs during the evening : Mesdames Hyde and Julian and Miss Loveday, and Messrs Loveday, Hyde, Halley, Martin, Goldfinch, McClure, Mcßae Bros., Beresford, Beck, and Barnett. The piano for the occasion was kindly lent by Mr Loveday.
