MATIERE.

A public meeting was held in Matiere Hall on Saturday eveninM| April nth, and a fairly representative number of settlers attended under very unfavourable climatic conditions. The convener of the meeting, Mr Lc Cocq, was voted to the chair, and explained that the object of the meeting was to consider the concessions made by Dr Rowlands, and consider the arrangements for the future. In his opening remarks the results of previous meetings at Mangaroa was placed before the settlers, and as a result of his (the chairman) observations the construction of the Medical Committee required to be considerably altered, with the object of making the same thoroughly representative,- and he would suggest that one representative be appointed from Matiere, Mangapapa,Niho Niho, Tatu, Waitewhenua, Toke Rimu and Mangaroa, to constitute any Medical Committee formed in the future. The suggestion met with considerable support, and everything points to such a scheme being favourably considered and accepted at the general meeting which will be held at Mangaroa on Saturday evening, April 18th. Considerable discussion arose in connection with the misunderstanding some of the settlers have in regard to the matter of the guarantee, and if the Committee could arrange to secure advantages from the doctor in the matter of accepting a fixed sum as remuneration, any deficiency, up to the fixed sum as arranged, being made up by the guarantors, such a result would give more general satisfaction than the existing state of affairs. The result of the deliberations was that the settlers here would see the present Medical Committee through with their current arrangements, and with the advantage of the expressions of opinion heard at this meeting, when the present agreement terminates greater benefits would be reaped to the general satisfaction of all contracting parties. It was pointed out that the concession as to cost of mileage, was one made by the Medical Committee with the object of reducing the cost to those requiring his services in various parts of the district. The meeting unanimously passed a vote of thanks to Messrs Dennison and Sandison, Secretary and Chairman of the Medical Committee, for their attendance. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the business of the evening.
