At the conclusion of the comedy the hall was cleared for dnncing, which was kept up until the small hours of the morning. Mrs Hyde presided at the piano at both concert and dance. The Society are well pleased with their effort, a credit balance of about £6 being derived from the performance. The Matiere Football Club is again on the war-path. , A Money-order Office and Postoffice Savings Bank was opened at the Matiere Post-office on April Ist; also the telephone office at Mangapapa. A communication was forwarded through Mr Jennings, M.P., some time ago by Mr E. Sowry, asking for a £ for £ subsidy towards the metalling of the Matiere-Paemako road as far as the Manghkahikatea Valley, providing the settlers will raise a loan under the " Loans to Local Bodies Act "to raise the balance. A reply has been received from the Minister stating that it will be considered when the Estimates are being prepared. I regret to have to record the death of the wife of one of our respected settlers, in the person of Mrs F. Cribb, of Mangakahikatea, the deceased lady having been ailing for some time.
On Thursday last Mr T. Humphries, the road surfaceman, received word that his son had been accidentally killed in Auckland. No further particulars are yet to hand. With the continuous wet weather our roads are getting in a fearful state, which means tliat carting is going to beppettyx _ etty dear during the winter months.
