THE MOKAU BRIDGE.

The following petition was placed before the Clifton County Council at last meeting, with a request that it be signed by the Chairman and members, and a resolution passed affirming the desirability of the work

" "We, the undersigned settlers, resident in North Taranaki and South Auckland, respectfully petition you (Minister of Public Works) to consider the advisibility of erecting a bridge over the Mokau river at some point or near the present punt ferry service. Owing to the great settlement of late years in the district affected, and the consequent great increase of traffic both passenger and stock, some more efficient and up-to-date crossing is required than the present ferry service. The settlers are willing to pay a toll for crossing a bridge, and as the stock is very great interest on the cost of the bridge would be met almost immediately. We therefore, respectfully ask you to give consideration to the prayer of your petitioners, who are suffering through loss of stock and loss of time owing to the present obsolete ferry service, and in duty bound, etc." On the motion of Cr. Joll, seconded by Cr. Gaustad it was resolved that the Chairman sign the petition on behalf of the Council. On the motion of the same Councillors it was resolved: "That this Council strongly supports the petition of the Mokau settlers for a bridge over the Mokau river, and considers that the increasing traffic on the main road between Auckland and Taranaki provinces warrant the construcof some more efficient means of communication than the present ferry service, and this Council earnestly hopes the Government will make provision on the forthcoming Public Works Estimates for carrying out this important work during the approaching season. The same petition is also being circulated in Te Kuiti and out-district, and is being stongly supported. Already a large number of signatures have been obtainted, and doubtless the whole of the settlers affected will give the petititon every support.
