MATIERE.
The Matiere Sports came off oa N the 9th, and although the weather the past few days had ibeen anything but nice, for that day it kept beautifully fine, and several hundred spectators, including a good number of ladies, rolled up for the day's outing. The sports were most successful from every point, big fields being the order of the day, and although the Club paid away £BO in prize money they should carry forward a substantial balance for next year, which speaks well for the Secretary (Mr B. O'Brien) and the Committee. Avery enjoyable social was held in the evening, the floor, music and supper being all that could be desired. Between the dances vocal items were rendered by Mrs Hyde, Messrs Kay, A. H. and A. P. Hyde. The following is a list of the successful competitors at the sports: — iooyds Handicap.— Rosenfelt I, W. Cosgravc 2. Bushmens' Chop.—Herold I, Pretty 2. Single-handed Saw.—Pretty I, Herold 2. 220 yds Handicap.—Banfield I, Sexton 2. Matiere Handicap Chop.—Pretty I, Morrison 2, Herold 3. Hunters' Competition for horses, over 3 hurdles and brush. —Bessie I. 440 yds Handicap.—Sexton I, Rosenfelt 2. Double-handed iSaw.—Herold and Dumphy I, Terry and Brown 2. Half-Mile Handicap.—G. Rosenfelt I, W. Rosenfelt 2, V. Woods 3. Underhand Chop. Dumphy I, Morrison 2, Mitchell 3. One Mile Handicap.— Sexton I, V. Woods 2, G. Rosenfelt 3. A boy, named Taylor, while playing at school this week fell and broke Jiis arm. He was taken in by coach to Mangaroa and attended to by Dr. Rowlands. Mr Tovey passed through Matiere this week with his bride, on his way to Waitewhcnua. The new private hotel was opened on sports' day, under the capable management of Mr Bert O'Brien. The improved accommodation was a boon to the visiting public. Mr Tuckman has now started work in his new shop as a wheelwright and blacksmith, and already a number of waggons stand about the place for repairs' Mr McQuillan, the telegraph lineman, has now completed the erection of the telephone to Mangapapa Valley, where it is installed in the schoolmasters residence. On Thursday evening last the residents of Niho Niho held a very enjoyable social in the Matiere Hall. During the evening presentations were made to Mr and Mrs Barrett, who are leaving the district after a residence of ten years, they being the pioneer settlers of the Ohura. The presentations were made by Messrs Weinberg and McDonald, Mr Barrett receiving a case of pipes, and Mrs Barrett a silver watch. On Friday the Mangapapa school children held their annual picnic, it being just twelve months since the school was opened. During that time the population has so increased that the school is now quite (inadequate, and during the hot weather it is necessary to take the children outside for lessons. Being favoured with perfect weather, all in that part of the district turned out and spent a most enjoyable da}'. A dance was held in the schoolroom in the evening, the amusement being kept up till daylight. A meeting of the Matiere Dramatic Society was held on Saturday evening, when the balance sheet was read, showing a credit balance. It was decided to hold a variety entertainment on April Ist, that being the date of opening the new saleyards.
