NGARUAWAHIA REGATTA.

A Successful Carnival

The great aquatic carnival of the year, the Ngaruawahia Regatta, which took place on Tuesday last, was one of the most successful gatherings that have been held at the pretty delta township of the Waikato. St. Patrick's Day is proverbially fickle in the matter of weather, but this year the prevailing influence was favourable, and a glorious clay resulted Special excursion trains were run from the various districts, and all were well patronised. It was estimated that about 10,000 Ipeople were present, and the river presented a beautiful sight, its waters dotted with canoes, and its banks lined with people all bent on enjoying the outing. During the day the Prime Minister and party arrived, and were entertained at a social in the Public Hall. Great interest was taken in the various races, the Maori events as usual being extremely popular. A feature of the programme was the parade of canoes which took place at the opening of the Carnival. The rowing races were also were contested the Auckland crews being successful in the majority of events. The championship of Waikato was won by the Ngaruawahia crew which defeated the Hamilton representatives after a good race.
