MATIERE.

I regret to lmvc to record tlmdeath of Mrs Monk, wife of the manager of the Matiere dairy factory, after a brief illness. Deceased took ill on Monday, the 17th, and was ordered to the hospital by Dr Rowlands where she was taken by Mrs Hyde on the 20th. An operation was performed at the hospital, and within fortyeight hours deceased succumbed. Much sympathy is felt in the district, Mr and Mrs Monk being recently married. Mrs Monk was just twentytwo years of age, and had recently come from Bell Block, Taranaki. The Matiere saleyards are now completed and reflect great credit on Mr Bailey who erected them. The settlers arc now awaiting the opening dav.

The recent rain has put quite a different aspect on the District. The country is now looking green again with the result that butterfat is increasing.

A farewell banquet was tendered to Mr Robert Barrett last week, when shout fifty people sat down to dinner. Mr Barrett, who was one of the first settlers to lake up land in the Ohura, has recently sold his farm to Mr Mossman, of Marlon. Mr Dense has also sold his farm at a satisfactory figure.

The Matiere Hall has now been gazetted a Magistrate's Court. Good nominations have been received for the Matiere Sports, which take place next Monday.
