MAIROA.

The Mairoa School picnic was held on Thursday, December 19th, in the school grounds. After lunch races for boys and girls were commenced, and rounders and other games followed, and were entered into with great spirit by young and old. Slight showers interfered with the other races, but in the meantime games were indulged in indoors. After the showers were over the races were concluded. The married women's race was won by Mrs J. Summerfield, and the married men's race bj r Mr Thoms. The young ladies' first race was'r won by Miss Churcher, of Paemako, and the second by Miss Rose Chestnut. The young men's race was won by Mr S. Voyce. Tea was then handed round, and all did justice to it. Afterwards a few games claimed attention till all was ready for the social, which commenced at 7 p.m. The first item was a recitation by Miss Maud Summerfield. Songs were sung at intervals by Messrs Armstrong, Main and Cranston, end Mrs C. iSummerfield. The dialogues, Christmas tree, distribution and presentation of prizes caused great amusement, as , did the recitations by the children and Mr Sellers. Supper was then handed round, after which all joined in singing " God save the King." A dance was held afterwards, at which a good number were present. At intervals songs were sung by Miss Armstrong, Messrs Armstrong, Murray, Chestnut, Sellers, Main and Cranston. At the conclusion of the dance all present joined heartily in singing " Auld Lang Syne." Great credit is due to Miss Menzies (teacher) for her efforts in connection with the social, which resulted so sucpessfull} r . The teacher was congratulated oii all hands, and was the recipient of best wishes for Christmas gnd New Year from all'and sundry.
