KAEAEA.

The first annual school picnic was held in Reserve on Friday, Djfcmber 20th, and was, in every reaflft, a great success. Subbeen taken up for prizes <Sid the residents responded liberally, a sum of about six pounds being collected. The teacher, Mr Moore, presented the prizes to the various classes. The attendance at the picnic was thoroughly representative of the district, about eighty people being present. Races for young and old were provided, and a thoroughly enjoyable time was spent. Among the adults events the married ladies race was won by Mrs J. Keighley, the single ladies' race by Miss Saunders, and the married men's race by A. Brough. The greatest credit is due to Mrs A. Smith, wife of the Chairman of the School Committee, for organising the picnic and to Messrs Green and Colebrook and others for donations. A dance was held in the evening, when about sixty people were present, and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thejparty broke up at early dawn, tired but happy. This district is looking extremely well at present. A considerable amount of bush has been felled this season, and judging by present appearances excellent burns should result. The increased area of grass next season should lead to good returns, and in most cases dairying will probably be undertaken.
