OPARURE.

The Oparure Native School dismissed for the midsummer vacation on Friday, December 13th, and will resume on Monday, January 2/th, 1908. It is proposed to hold a picnic for the scholars on January 10th (weather permitting), when all parents are kindly requested to assist with refreshments.

On Friday the children and parents assembled to witness the prize-giving. Several songs, recitations, readings, club-drilling, etc., were rendered by the children in a very efficient manner, and great credit is due to the teachers for *he progress the children have made during their stay among them. Another notable feature is that most of the children have not been able to attend any school only for the past two years, since the erection of the Oparure Native School. The Chairman of the Committee (Huirau te Tamahana), and the Rev. Mr Harris addressed the children in suitable words, urging them to learn all they could, and so be able, in a few years, to read and write, and transact business for their parents, who were not able to go to any school and learn for themselves. The prizes were then presented, and a hearty cheer was given for the' winner in each class, whose names are : —Rore Josephs, standard 4 ; laka Wharere, standard 3'; Mihinga Thompson, standard 2 ; Miriama Puhi, standard I ; Anderson Katu, senior primer; Miriama Tumohi, junior primer.
