KAWHIA.

At a meeting held in the "Settler " office, it was decided to form a • Horticultural Society for the Kawhia County. The following officers were elected: Patron, Hon. W. W. McCardle, M.L.C.president, Mr W. A. Mason, J. P. ; vice-presidents, Dr C. Campbell Jenkins, Messrs F. Cowern, W. J. Shaw, A. W. Elliott, W. Sobye, A. W. Babbage, W. D. Humphreys, T. Goodfellow and G. W. Douglas ; com- , mittee, Mesdames F. W. Newton, W. Morgan, Messrs Sircombe, Wilson, Chase, E. Fahvasser, Jonathan, Pettit and Durham. We are having very hot weather here now, but there is almost more grass than the farmers have stock to keep down. Although calm inside, there has been too much sea outside for s.s. Rothsay to work Nukuhakari, and the delay is keeping the fiaxmill back as she has machinery on board and more waiting for her. In spite of the low price flax is still coming in, and the Marakopa mill is going to start work again shortly. The Native Land Court sits here about March, and it has heen suggested that as there will be a large number of Maoris here then it would be a good time to get up a regatta. A social is being got up by way of •a farewell to Mr and Mrs Barron, who are leaving the district to settle on their farm in Taranaki.

The weather is rapidly drying the fallen bush, and if it keeps fine for a week or two longer many of the farmers intend to burn about Christmas. The new Road Inspector (Mr Bathe), who is to take Mr Barron's place, has arrived.
