Te Kuiti Telephone.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I read your well-timed article ■in last week's issue regarding the urgent want of public buildings at Te Kuiti with pleasure, and cannot refrain from drawing attention to a matter which should not exist in any town. I refer to the telephone at Te Kuiti. The office has now become a busy place, and messages are being sent at all times during the day. Often these telegrams relate to business matters of importance, and naturally one does not wish every casual visitor at the Post-office to learn his private affairs. It is well known that every message sent away can be heard outside the building, but this is not the fault of the operator, as, in the box-like building which does duty as a post and telephone office, it is impossible to speak above a whisper without being heard outside. We are being treated in a very lax manner by the Department, and it is time a strong effort was made_ to stir the authorities to realise the importance and urgency of our claims. I am glad to be able to support you in your efforts to secure recognition for Te Kuiti as regards public buildings. Your remarks with reference to the courthouse and other offices were to the point, but I really think the Post-office is the most needed at present. —I am, etc., X.Y.Z.
