OHURA VALLEY.

The weather has been extremely bad of late, consequently the roads are in a terrible state. This is unfortunate for the settlers, as in view of the inauguration of the dairying industry in the district this season, it was hoped the weather would be fairly favourable. As things are at present there does not appear much promise of an early start in the milking line. The boiler for the Co-ope-rative Factory is stuck on the road at the nine mile hill, and cannot be shifted uutil the roads improve. This is a serious matter for the whole of the settlers, and conveys some idea of the disadvantages of the back-block life. The importance of roads cannot be over estimated, and each year the approach of winter is awaited in our district with something approaching horror. Mr Julian, assistant road engineer, is in this district at present, making a tour. It is gratifying to see that he is coming through when the roads are at their worst. A popular wedding takes place at Matisre this week, when Mr Harold Doar and Miss Simmonds will be joined in matrimony. Mr A. H. Hyde is having rather a bad time lately, and is confined to a dark room with bad eyes. However, he is slowly improving, and hopes to be about again in a few days. TheOhura Settlers' Association's Ball, which takes place this month, promises to be a huge success, and arrangements are well forward for the function.
