Mr Jennings lias arranged an interview with Sir Joseph Ward, when Ihe StratfordOngarue railway, and oilier mailers of interest to Ihe district will be discussed. The Ipetition of P. 11. Lush and others, of Mairoa, presented by Mr Jennings, was reported by the Education Committee, who recommended il 'to Ihe Government for favourable ■consideration. The petition lias reference lo the inadequate payments of teachers in outlying districts, owing to I he average a i lend a nee of pupils being lessened by weallier and road conditions. The j)etition of setlleir. in Ohura, asking that they be allowed the option of obtaining the freehold, was before the Land Committee, when the Member for Egmoni gave evidence in favour of the request, as setllers were not allowed the option at the time the land was thrown open. The matter will come up in the House when the Land Bill discussion is on. Settlers in Mangaotaki district have also petitioned the House in the same direction as the Ohura settlers. LATKR. A reply to a deputation, consisting of Messrs Loveday and Hyde, of Ohura, and Messrs Jennings and Lawry, M's.H.K., requesting the early start of the Ongarue-St rat ford railway from Ongarue, the Premier stated that he had given instructions for the survey to be made, but until he was placed in possession of fuller information by the Department he would not promise anything further.
