MATIERE.

The Matiere Dramatic [Society announce their initial performance for September 24th. The first part of the programme "will be an "All Black " show to be followed by the laughable comedy in one act, " The Doctor's Patients." Rehearsing is in full swing, and the hall assumes a lively aspect on two nights a week. Miss Gretta Simmons has arrived from Australia, on a visit to her pari ents, Mr and Mrs Simmons, of Ohura boarding house. \ The carpenters erecting the new? accommodation house, have not as' yet hauled down the flag. Wanted \ known —the reason why ? The needless waste of money in this district still goes on at an alarming rate. This is the latest: The contract has been let by the Farmers' Auctioneering Company for the carting of totara posts, for the erection of their saleyards at Matiere, from Ongarue, a distance of twenty miles. There is a large quantity of suitable timber (totara) at the sixteen mile peg, which could have been : obtained, and which would have decreased the distance of cartage by fifteen miles. Again, it is also thought by the settlers here, that tenders should have been called locally for the work, considering that they are all, or nearly all. shareholders in the Company, and will, naturally, have to bear their share of the expense. That this proceeding on the part of the executive of the Fanners' Auctioneering Company, shows a want of foresight, and < knowledge of local requirements, is the opinion of the settlers interested. Mrs T. Taylor presented her husband with yet another little " bushfeller " on August 16th. If an inspector of the Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, was to pay a visit to the Ohura, I fancy some of the bullock-team owners would not be too highly pleased.
