TE KUITI MEDICAL FUND.

A meeting was held in Hetet's hall, Te Kuiti, on Monday evening last, for the purpose of discussing ways and means of obtaining the services of a medical man for Te Kuiti district. There was a very large attendance, and the Rev. R. Mitchell was voted to the chair. Mr G. Elliott, convener of the meeting, in explaining the circumstances which led to the meeting being called, said they were all aware of the necessity of obtaining a reliable resident doctor for the place, and in the light of recent happenings this want had been emphasised. He hoped those present would unite for the purpose of filling the urgent requirement. Mr E. H. Hardy drew attention to i the fact that some time ago a Com- ? mittee had been formed and certain ; steps taken to obtain financial support sufficient to induce a good doctor to come to the district. He (Mr Hardy) as Chairman of the Committee, and Mr J. Ormsby, as Secretary, were present, and seeing that a considerable amount of work had been done by them he thought it advisable that the previous project should be assisted, and there was no doubt it could be carried out successfully. Mr Ormsby spoke in a similar strain and considered they only required a little additional interest shown to carry out the scheme which was already well-known to all the settlers. The main tiling was to secure a sufficient guarantee; afterwards the details could be considered, and a workable-project devised. Mr Mclndoe suggested that as there was a movement on foot to form a branch of the Oddfellows' Lodge in the town, there should be \some understanding arrived at between those desirous of forming a lodge, and those who wished to procure a resident medical man without joining the lodge. Mr Smith also spoke with regard to the formation of an Oddfellows' Lodge, and said a public meeting would be called next week to put matters in train.

After further desultory discussion it was resolved that the meeting be canvassed for support towards obtaining a guarantee for a doctor. A committee was then formed, consisting of the Rev. R. Mitchell, Messrs Walsh, Forsyth, Hattaway and Elliott, for the purpose of assisting in obtaining a guarantee on similar lines to that already promoted, and to work in conjunction with the old Committee. A circular was drafted for sending round to residents, and a number of guarantee forms are to bs distributed in order to give people the opportunity of supporting the project definitely.
