ACCIDENT AT WAITOMO.

A serious accident occurred at Waitomo on Saturday last, whereby a bush worker, named Horner, had his leg broken. Horner was engaged bushfelling on Mr Stevenson's section, and a tree, in falling, kicked back and struck the man on the thigh, fracturing it badly. The leg was also badly lacerated at the back, caused, it is thought, by being jammed on to a stump. The unfortunate man was carried on a stretcher to the Government Accommodation House at ¥/aitomo, where Mr H. A. Govier rendered first aid and did everything possible to alleviate the sufferings. The accident took place at 3 p.m., and as it was impossible to send the sufferer to the Hamilton Hospital until Monday, endeavours were made to procure medical attendance from Te Awamutu or Hamilton. These efforts proving unsuccessful a message was sent to Te Kuiti. The Rev. R. Mitchell left for Waitomo at 11 p.m., arriving about I a.m. on Sunday morning, and rendered all the assistance within his power. Mr Holland, chemist, of Te Kuiti, also proceeded to Waitomo, arriving about 7 a.m. The patient was kept as easy as possible, and on Monday morning was sent on to Hamilton Hospital. News has since been received that ■Horner has to have his leg amputated. At latest advices Horner was doing as well as could be expected.
