"HUAHUA" PIGEONS.
At the Te Kuiti Magistrate's Court on Friday last, a Native from Otorohanga was changed, before Mr Northcroft, with being in possession of Native game during a close season. The evidence of the police was to the effect that the Native in question had two tins of " huahua " pigeon, which he was forwarding on to the big meeting of Natives at Huntly, and as this was a close season for pigeons they had taken proceedings against him. The evidence of the Native was given and Mr Northcrofl, in dismissing the information, stated that this was a custom among the N.atves from time immemorial, and so long as evidence could be brought to show that, the game was shot during an open season so long would he give similiar decisions. He compared " huahua " pigeon to the potted meats and game of the Pakeha, and mentioned that it would be pretty hard lines if a man, seen going home with a tin of wild duck or quail in his possession, was subject to be brought before a court of justice to answer a charge of having game in his possession.
