PROPOSED TOWN BOARD FOR TE KUITI.

A general meeting of residents was hpld in Hetet's Hall, on Monday night last, to discuss the report of the Committee appointed to go into the question of the formation of a Board. Mr J. Tammadge occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance. Mr W. R. Franklin, secretary, read the recommendations of the Committee, which were to the effect that it was advisable to form a Board, under the " Town Districts Act, 1881," and its amendments, and that the boundaries include the Te Kuiti township and the Te Kuiti village sections, The Chairman, in stating the position, said he thought they were all practically agreed on the subject, the only question would be that of boundaries, and he invited opinions from those present. Mr Sims proposed, and Mr Lorigan seconded a motion in favour of securing a proper legal opinion as to the responsibility of the Maori Land Board re the formation of streets. Mr Pine favoured waiting until the liability of the Maori Land Board had been ascertained. He considered it most important that the actual legal position should be known before a Board was formed. _ When that was done they could consider the setting up 7 of a local body and everyone would know the exact responsibility attaching to the township by the parties interested. It had been said that he was against the formation of a Board. He wished to correct that opinion, but thought it advisable to know where they were. Mr Hardy stated that he had placed the matter before Judge Browne, President of the Maori Land Board, who had promised to lay the matter before the Government, and let them know what the position was. He moved as amendment that the meeting be gdjourjied until a reply had been received from Judge Browne. The amendment upon being put to the meeting was lost, and it was eventually decided to obtain the best possible legal opinion on the situation. The majority of those present contributed half-a-crown each towards the expense, a sum of about £2 being collected. The meeting then adjourned §ine die."
