A meeting for the purpose of forming a Rugby Union, was held in Mr Sims' commercial room, Te Kuiti, on Wednesday, April 17th. There were present: Messrs Power and Steel (Te Kuiti), Cleaver and Hira (Oparure), and Elliot and Kihi (Piopio). Mr Power was voted to the chair, and explained the object of the meeting. The district was growing very rapidly and it was desirable to organise the game properly, otherwise the players would not have a chance to get together, and would not improve. Moreover, when a governing body was appointed, it acted in the best interests of the sport, and gave a standing to the district in the matter of football, which it could not otherwise attain. Mr Elliott supported the Chairman's remarks and moved a resolution to the effect that a Union be formed, to be called the Maniapoto Rugby Union, and that it be affiliated with the Auckland Rugby Union.

The motion was seconded by Mr Cleaver, and carried unanimously. It was decided that the contribution from each club be one shilling from each club member. Carpenters City.

The first match of the season was played in Te Kuiti on Saturday last, when teams representing the above, met and had a friendly game. Great interest was shown by players and spectators, of which there was a good number, and, although it was the first match, some good form was shown. From the kick-off City carried the ball into their opponents 25, and J. Hetet, from a splendid pass, scored near the corner flag, but the attempt at goal failed to add to the score. The Carpenters then rallfcd, and with a great rush, took the ball almost the whole length of the field, when Montgomery, with a quick dash, scored, the kick at goal being unsuccessful. From this, right on, City had the best of the game, and in quick succession two tries were obtained, this time Boles and Harris being the scorers, and J. , Hetet added the extra points. The spell ended : City 13, Carpenters 3. At the commencement of the second spell play was for a time, fairly even, and after some hard play, H. Hetet took a splendid pass and scored for city, but the kick did not add to the score. Play was for awhile centred, and then a lot of line work was indulged in. Eventually, after City had worked its way into ithe Carpenters' 25, Boles made a great run and scored again for City, and J. Hetet converted. City 21, Carpenters 3. This decided the first match of the season, and, with the exception of a few bruises, and a little stiffness, all came off the field Scot free.
