MATIERE.
For some considerable time the Ohura Settlers' Association have been endeavouring" to obtain a resident iTdoctor for this district, and their efiorts have at last been rewarded, pr Rowlands, who has a recommendation from Dr Mason, the chief health officer, has been on a visit to the district, and after conferring with the Settlers' Medical Committee has decided to take their offer which includes a substantial bonus and a free house. The doctor will take up his residence in Matiere in about three weeks' time, Mr Hyde's residence having been secured for him. It will be a big boom to the Ohura settlers to have a medical man residing here, as hitherto it has been almost impossible to get assistance even in urgent cases. Mr Hyde has decided to erect a new two storied shop and residence for his own use, which should add considerably to the appearance of the township. Mr O'Brien's boarding house is to be erected at once, so that there will sgon be signs of progress here. The Niho-Niho bridge is now completed and a start has been made with the bridge over the Waikaka river at the Whenukura crossing, The Roads Department have decided to have 500 yards of burnt papa placed on the Matiere road, and tenders have been invited for the work. Patches of pumicing have also been put in hand, so that the settlers should feel the benefit of the work during the coming winter.
