An accident occurred to the well known Maori chief Taonui, at Te Kuiti, on Saturday last. In riding down the Awakino road Taonui was thrown from his horse and sustained a slight fracture of the collarbone. A recent telegram from Dunedin states that representations were recently made to the Minister for Lands with the object of having a portion of the Totara Estate, North Otago, which has been acquired by the Government, reserved for the purposes of an experimental farm, but advice has been received that the Cabinet has decided not to reserve any land. The decision has been received with general expressions of dissatisfaction, more so as the Hon. T. Y. Duncan, when Minister for Lands, had been strongly favourable to the proposal. Sharp earthquake shocks were experienced in several places in . the South Island on Tuesday morning last. At Takaka in the Nelson district there was considerable damage done. Bottles and glassware in shops were broken and in the country districts the cement work of some of the hop kilns were cracked, and several chimneys were demolished.
