THE SLAUGHTERMEN'S STRIKE.

The position wilh regard to the strike in Canterbury remains unchanged, all efforts to arrive at an amicable settlement of the difficulties having proved unavailing. Messrs Witty and Davey, M's.H.R., endeavoured to mediate between the employers and the union. The members addressed a meeting of the union and were given authority to act on behalf of the union. They then waited on the employers but had to return and report that their efforts had been unsuccessful, the companies holding that the two members were not empowered'to make any arrangement which would be binding. The union members state that they will have nothing to do with the Arbitration Court, and contend that the Court does not know anything of the difficulties which the men have to contend with. Mr Pope, President of the Uuion, states that some years ago the companies offered the men 2ls a hundred and the Court, in making it award fixed the rate at 20s. The union has no faith in the Court and would not appeal to it. The men were demanding 25s a hundred and were determined to get it. It is understood that the Auckland slaughtermen have filed an application for their claim to improved conditions to be heard at the next sitting of the Arbitration Court.
