PROPOSED RAILWAY FROM LAKE TAUPO TO MAIM TRUNK LINE.
At the sitting of the Maori Land Administration Board at Te Kuili, on Thursday, an application was made by Mr Skerrett, of Wellington, on behalf of the Tongariro Timber Compan} r , to have the restriction removed from certain blocks of Native land between the Main Trnnk line and Lake Taupo. The proposed railway would cover a distance of about 35 miles and be fed by branches into various bushes. The district which would be opened up by the line, carries splendid bush, and extends to the bush worked by the Taupo Totara Timber Company at Mokai. The cost of the proposed work is roughly estimated at £120,000, and the area leased from the Natives would be about 59,000 acres. The probable junction of the line with the Main Trunk railway would be close to Piriaka, and it would form an additional connection between the Thermal regions and the Wanganui river. Already a considerable amount of preliminary work has been done in the matter of obtaining the consent of the Native owners, and a rough survey of the proposed line has been made. The recommendation of the Maori Land Board, with regard to the removal of restrictions, will be made after the position of the owners and other matters have been duly investigated.
