any horse or other animal past the engine, whether such person shall be meeting or overtaking the engine; and for the purpose of requiring a driver to stop the engine as aforesaid, it shall be sufficient if the person requiring the engine to stop, signify the same to the driver by holding up one hand.

20. No person shall drive a traction engine along any road outside a town district or village at a greater speed than five miles an hour; or through any town, district, or village at a greater speed than three miles an hour; or over any bridge or culvert at a greater speed than one mile an hour.

21. No person shall sound the whistle of a traction engine, or cause the same to blow off steam, upon any public road. 22. No driver or person in charge of a traction engine, on any road, shall permit the cylinder taps to be opened, or the steam to attain such a pressure as to exceed the limit fixed by the safety valve, within sight of any person riding, driving, or leading any horse or cattle upon a road. 23. No person shall bring any traction engine or any machine, or vehicle attached thereto, on or across any bridge whilst any person is riding, driving, or leading a horse or cattle upon, or within forty feet of such bridge.

24. No driver or person in charge of a traction engine shall permit the same to stand upon a bridge for the purpose of drawing water, or for any other purpose, unless compelled to do so by accident or other unavoidable circumstance.

25. No person shall drive or take any traction engine having one or more trucks or other vehicles attached thereto, upon or across any bridge or culvert, unless a sufficient distance shall be kept between the engine and any truck or vehicle, and also between each truck or vehicle, as to insure that there shall not at an}*- one time be upon any one span of the bridge, or upon the bridge if consisting of only one span, or upon the culvert, a greater weight than ten tons. 26. No person shall discharge any ashes, cinders, or other refuse from a traction engine upon any bridge or culvert, or upon any road within twenty feet of the centre of such road, or unless such ashes, cinders, or refuse shall have been completely extinguished and spread out so as not to in any wise injure such road or any fence.or thing thereon or adjacent thereto. /

27. No person shall drive upon any road a'ny traction engine, to the wheels of which are attached (permanently or/ temporarily) studs, grippers, or other pieces of iron, so placed, shaped /or constructed as to sink into or break the surface of the road.

28. The person in charge of a traction engine shall give immediate notice to the County Engineer, County Clerk or Road Overseer, of any damage or injury- done by the engine or any vehicle attached therero to any road, way, fence, bridge, culvert, watercourse, drain, side ditch, or any thing appertaining to any such road, and if such damage has rendered the road or its appurtenances dangerous for ordinary traffic or to the public safety, the owner or person in charge of .such engine, shall, in addition to giving such notice as aforesaid, place and maintain in such a position and for such time as the County Engineer, Clerk or Road Overseer shall direct, such signals as shall be sufficient to give warning to all persons using such road by day or by night, of the existence of such danger. 29. The owner of any traction engine shall forthwith good any damage caused by such traction engine to any road or any bridge or culvert or the appurtenances thereof. 30. Nothing in this By-law contained nor any license or permit issued hereunder shall be deemed to relieve the owner, or person in charge of any traction engine, from liability to pay compensation i;i respect of any damage done by such traction engine to any road, bridge or culvert or the appurtenances thereof, MOTOR CARS.

31. Any person driving a motor car upon any road, shall whenever required so to do by any person desiring to ride, drive or lead any horse or other animal past such a motor car (whether such person shall be meeting or overtaking the same) take such motor car to the side of the road, and stop until the horse or other animal or animals shall have passed such motor car. And for the purpose of requiring a person driving a motor car to go on one side of the road and stop, it shall be sufficient if the person requiring him so to do shall signify the same to him by holding up one hand. f

32. Any person driving a motor car upon any road, meeting or overtaking any person either on foot or riding or driving any horse or other animal sliall sound a horn or give other similar warning before approaching within one chain of such person.

33. The'driver of a motor car when meeting or passing any vehicle or horseman on a side cutting shall keep on the outside of the road but in all other cases shall observe the ordinary rules of the road. LICENSED VEHICLES. 34. No person shall ply for hire for the carriage of goods within the County, or any part thereof, with any vehicle unless such vehicle is duly licensed by the Council. All licenses for vehicles to so ply for hire shall be in writing, under the hand of the County Clerk ; and shall be in force for a period of twelve months, as from the first day of April in each year. 35. The following fees shall be payable in respect of vehicles licensed to ply for hire of the carriage of goods within the County. For each two-wheeled vehicle, 20s For. each four-wheeled vehicle, 40s Such fees shall be payable to the County Clerk before the issue of the license. 36. The owner of every licensed vehicle plying for hire for the carriage of goods within the County shall cause the words licensed carrier with the nnmber of the vehicle mentioned in the license thereof, to be painted in legible letters and figures on every such vehicle.
