TARANAKI LAND BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held on Tuesday, January 15th, when there were present: Messrs Heslop, Rattenbury, McCluggage and Cennett. In the absence of the Commissioner, Mr Heslop was voted to the chair.

D. Sullivan applied to sublet sec. I, block 7, Pouatu, to P. Herbert.—Mr Sullivan is to be informed that the Board cannot accept the agreement put before it as a sub-lease, and that he must make satisfactory arrangements for residence on the land or dispose of his interest within one month. The Rangers reported having resumed possession of the following forfeited sections: —Sec. 2, blockl I, Taurakawa ; sec. 15, block 2, Aria. S. Williamson applied to obtain the latter as an addition to his holding.—The report was adopted. The Taurakawa section is to be re-offered under Part 111, of the Land Act and the Aria section for lease in perpetuity classed as light bush land. A. M. Riddell applied for a rehearing of the forfeiture of sec. 19, block 2, Ohura, —The forfeiture was rescinded and further consideration was held over till the Commission reports on the matter.

John Barron, Crown Lands Ranger, reported upon the inspection of 37 holdings comprising 21,106 acres; improvements required £5767, affected £9713 ; 18 resident, 21 required to reside, 5 non-resident; 12 have not effected sufficient improvements and I is in default for both requirements. — E. Tolme reported on the inspection of 52 holdings comprising an area of 33,130 acres ; improvements repuired £7413, effected £9802 ; 19 resident, 13 required to reside; 13 have not effected sufficient improvements ; 2 are not residing; 4 have not effected sufficient improvements and are non-resident. — The report was adopted, and those in default will be called on to show cause for not complying with the conditions.

Mary Williams applied for twelve months' exemption from personal residence on sec. 9, block 5, Ohura. — Request granted. B. MacFarlane and C. Hope applied for extension of time to reside on sec. 4, block 9, Qhura. —Under the special

circumstances, twelve months extension was granted. C. Rodgers applied for a temporary grazing tenancy of sec. 12, block 13, Ohura. —Applicant is to be informed that the Board will be agreeable to lease the grazing at a rental of £3 per annum, but that the house is let to the Education Board for school purposes. Mrs Dean, applied through Mr Barron for permission to fence in the forest on part of the Township Reserve in front of the hotel, Whangamomona. —The application was refused. Four mortgages for assent were approved, two being endorsed. Defaulters were dealt with as follows : T. R. and L. E. Anderson, sec. 69, block 14, Pouatu, non-resident, has man on, and trying to sell. If transfer not effected to some person who will reside within one month, this and sec. 8, block 2, Mahoe, will be forfeited.—E. Webbey, sec. 2, block 8, Waro, non-improvement, unable to get labour for bush-felling.—M. Kelly sec. I, block 7, Cape, non-improve-ment, illness prevented him. Six months extension.—Morrell and Lyford, sec. 3, block 6, Ohura, non-resi-dence, cannot build yet for lack of funds. Six months extension.—J. P. Flett, sec. 25, block 15, Aria, non-im-provement, thought he had longer time to commence. Six months' extension.—J. Iskirka, sec. 5, block 9, Totoro, non-improvement, access bad, had to wait, is making a start at once. Explanation satisfactory. —Jas. Patterson, sec. 19, block I, Aria, non-im-provement, accident prevented him, is arranging to start at once. Six months' extension.—W. Heath, sec. 5, block 15, Aria, non-residence, cannot get timber on the ground yet. Extension until September granted.—J. H. Graham, sec. 21, block I, Aria, nonimprovement, owing to illness could not get anything done. Six months' extension.—D. McCurdy, sec. 12, block 2, Aria, non-improvement, illness and misfortune prevented him, is going up at end of this month. Three months' extension.-*-.!. R. Brock, sec. 20, block I, Aria, could not obtain assistance. Not sufficient excuse; forfeit.—G. Black, sec. 2, block 12, Aria, non-residence. Forfeit. —S. McGrath, sec. 13, block 12, Aria, non-improve-ment. Forfeit.—G. S. Stacey, sec. 15, block 12, Aria, non-improvement. Forfeit. —F. R. Lacon, sec. 5, block 14, Ohura, non-improvement. Forfeit.—E. Delahunty, sec. 13, block 10, Ohura, non-improvement. Forfeit.
