KAWHIA.

Many here were pleased to see the King Country Chronicle and to know that there is another journal prepared to assist the " back-blocker " of these parts. Great interest was centred at Kawhia by the election of a Town Board. Eleven candidates went to the poll, the voting being as follows: — W. W. McCardle 44, A': L. Turrel 43, J. E. Scott 42, E. C. Falwasser 42, G. G. Jonathan 31, C. C. Jenkins 29. F. W. Newton 28, Taui Wetere 9> W. Morgan 8, E. D. Hamilton 5» E. Dance I. The first five were elected. The Northern S.S. Co., are at last making a serious effort to cater for our Marakopa and Kiritehere settlers, and ftiere is every probability of arrangements being made for a small boat to act as tender for the " Kia Ora," collecting and distributing cargo at Marakopa. Tennis is going strong and there are many entries for the tournament, the prize trophy for which, has been presented by Mrs Newton. Operations in connection with -the erection of the telephone line round the harbour have been commenced, and the first portion connecting Oparau, is nearing completion Mr Greenslade, M.H.R., has been successful in his efforts to secure an improved mail service to the township on the southern side of the harbour, and I learn that Kinokahau, Waiharakeke, Te Maika and here, are to have two mails a week, a contract having been already let. Some time ago, we were promised that the Union - S.S. Co's. Corinna would visit this port from the south and New Plymouth, but so far the boat has not put in an appearance. I am afraid our trade at present does not warrant the running of a boat of the Corinna class. As the proposed Central Dairy Factory has not eventuated, many ot our farmers have made a start at making butter themselves, and it will not be long before there is a considerable export of this product. The Kawhia bachelors gave a very enjoyable dance last Friday in Scott's hall.
