THE KAIKOURA STAR KAIKOURA, NOV. 6, 1906. GOVERNMENT SCENICRESERVES.

Mr Frank Warp, the :t P‘ pointed Crown Lamlsßa uijpL who has been recently transfer®.from . the Canterbury this I district, lias, we understand been on a visit to Kaikoura in t®interests of the Marlborough Waste Lands Board regarding sethic reserves. It is reported thatharecently been inspecting the property of the Crown tenants, ami has been producing plans uf the South Coast properties, which it is proposed to set aside as sceije reserves. The plans are extr finely indefinite as regards area "To be set aside as beauty spots by the Ranger, and the settlers are quite in a quandary as to how to act in the matter, at the same time being ever ready to give every assistance for the preservation of accessible beauty spots. It seems that in the case of Messrs Goulter Bros., at Goose Bay, who hold two sections, one frontage, —in station 92—has been completely severed from the back portion, leaving a frontageof approximately only 100 acres, and taking a strip at the back of the homestead site of some fifteen chains in width, by about a mile long. The Ranger proposes to sever some 200 acres of cleared bush land from the remainder of section No 95. This appears to us to be rather a peculiar manner in which to take property from our settlers tor the purpose of setting aside scenic reserves, without first consulting the owners of the 4jaid property In ths former case it is proposed to practically cut off i access to the back portion of tinproperty, and in the 2 latter .instance a uarrow strip of only five chains is left for access to the bjiek portion of the section. Generally speaking, the settlers are onlytoo ready to protect the their front sections, butwe eon/der ■ the Ranger is taking a inostjuif-' I wisestep in the direction preserving bush which wiJU b tk-ally inaccessible to ’WlM’fWwlfi’.v ami the means of spoiling the homestead sites of the settlers concerned.
