Culverden Train Service.

In accordance with the promise of Sir Joseph Ward, the Railway Department has decided to improve the railway service between Culverden and Christchurch, and the alteration in the time-table will co'me into force on March 1. A train will leave Christchurch at 8.50 a.m., daily, arriving at Culverden about 12.20 p.m. This train will cover the distance in fifty-five minutes less time than the present time-table service. A return train will leave Culverden at 3.5 p.m. daily, reaching Christchurch at 6.35 p.m. On this there will also be a time reduction of fifty minutes. To rearrange the service and give full effect to the acceleration above noted, it will be necessary to run a goods trqin to and from Culverden daily. The cost "of the alterations will be £9OOO a year, and the service will be run for a year on trial. Arrangements have also been made to shorten the coach journey from Culverden to Hanmer. Under the amended timutable the train will arrive at Culverden at 12.20 p.m., and the coach will leave at 1 p.m., arriving at Hanmer at 4.30 p.m., returning from Hanmer at 10.30 a.m. and arriving at Culverden at 2 p.m. The alterations will effect a saving in time of an hour and fifty minutes between train and coach, as against the present service.—“ Lyttelton Times.”
