Organ Recital.
The encouragement contained in the attendance at the recital given by Mr S. May son, organist, in the Presbyterian Church on Christmas night must be very gratifying to him as well as highly pleasing to everyone here who can appreciate good music. The thirteen choice selections given by him were from as many composers, embracing a delightfully diversified field of musical thought, the theme of the respective compositions being presented. to the eager listeners with exquisite taste. The instrumentation, throughout, was masterful, and exhibited to those present Mr Mayson’s marked ability as an organist. His contributions were (a) Prelude on 100th Psalm (Best) and (b) Bercuse (Duncan), (a) Prelude and Fugue (Bach) and (b) Chant San Par oles, Andante in G (Batiste), (a) Melody in F (Wesley) and Postlude (De Vincent), Rondo in F (Couperin), (a) Cantilene (Meale) and (b) Caprice (Botting), Triumph Song (Pearce), (a) Andante Con Moto (Lound) and (b) Grand March (Taylor). It is difficult to select any one item for particular mention. Each possessed individual characteristics, brought out in clear relief by the organist, so that it is simply a matter of taste to say which one deserves the higher mention. Suffice it to say, therefore, that Mr Mayson afforded all a rich musical treat. His contributions alone were enough to constitute a feast, but there were added seven vocal items by members of the choir. These were : “ Charity,” sung by Miss Gibson ; “He was despised” and “Queen of Angels,” by Miss Davidson ; “He shall feed His flock ” and “ O rest in the Lord,” by Miss M. McLauchlan; “He wipes the tear” and “ Only tired,” by Miss Gray. These young ladies sang very well indeed, reflecting much credit on their instructor—Mr Mayson. The proceedings, which commenced with the “ Old Hundredth,” were concluded with Hymn '4s7—an atv tractive one. The audience evidently appreciated the feast of which they had partaken, as many resumed their seats in anticipation of more. Thanks were returned on behalf of the organist by the Rev. W. McAra.
