Dunedin, March 8 Championship of Otago. First distance, 1 mile : Martin 1, Sutherland 2, Ralston 3. Second distance, 3 miles : Sutherland 1, Martin 2, R. Connell 3. Sutherland won by half a wheel. The race looked a good thing for Martin, who dropped back 3 yards from the post, allowing Sutherland to win. The championship events (1 mile and 3 miles) were decided by most points in each event. Sutherland and Martin, with 7 points each, deadheated, and should have raced off, but decided to divide the stake. Auckland, March 8 In the exhibition attack on the 120yds Hurdle record at the Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s meeting G. Smith, paced by ,W. Martin, covered the distance in 15 l-ssecs, thus establishing a world’s record. The previous best record was 15 3-sths secs, hekj by Kraenzlin, American.
