Duke of Devonshire, giving evidence before Committee on Betting, said it was impossible and undesirable to stop bet ting on racecourses or in private clubs. It was not necessary to license bookmakers. T. Jones, well known in connection with Australian racing, also examined, testified there was far more betting in Australia than in England. It was equally possible to stop a river from flowing as to prevent betting in Australia. It was not difficult to control bookmakers in the Colonies. Ambassadors at Constantinople of Great Britain, France, Russia, and Italy have presented Joint Note to Turkish Government protesting against hindrances and harassing conditions placed in wii j* of Cretans’ personal and commercial intercourse in Turkey. Berlin, March 9** , Officially announced in Berlin that cheap and sure means discovered of giving cattle immunity from rinderpest. New York, March 8 Western-bound train on Gal-veston-San Antonio railway, in Texas, derailed and caught fire ; 17 persons killed. Sydney, March 10 Horses in mail coach bolted at Moruya, 198 miles North of Sydney, and came into collision with a building. Man named Heffernan was killed, and 4 other passengers seriously injured. Melbourne, March 7 Manager Pacific Cable announces rates at 3s per Word to Europe, and 2s to America. Wellington, March 8 Eleven feet of water was pumped into hold of Jessie Osborne before fire was suppressed and the barque , settied down till her keel touched bottom. Water now pumped out again.. Damage very great, more by water than fire. Vessel will require re-decking and extensive repairs and will be delayed over 2 months. If fire had occurred at sea she would have been total loss. Kauri gum escaped fire, but was possibly damaged by smoke. At Dunedin Peter Grant pleaded ‘ Guilty ’ at the Police Court to five informations of ‘ tote ’ betting, and was fined £2O and costs in each case. The remainder of the informations were withdrawn. This closes the prosecution of Grant, against whom fifty-five informations were criminally laid.
