Stoddart’s Team. Unexpected Win for the Visitors. The London Chronicle applauds Gregory’s fine innings, and considers match shows that in future England will be hard pressed to hold its own. The difference in the rate at which the two teams got runs is very’ marked. While Gregory and Blackham put up 154 runs tn 75 minntes, the Englishmen took all dav to score 201 runs. ' SYDNEY, Dec 19 Englishmen, in second*innings, put up 437 ; Ward 117. The Australians missed Biackham behind the wickets, the veteran having had his hand split. Fielding of Australians is held not to be up to first class standard, exceptions being brilliant work done by Gregory and Trott, while English batting is considered slow and not up to what was expected. Dec 20 Rain fell during last night, and the wicket is heavy. The score is now 142 for 4 wickets ; Darling 53, Giffen 41. Later. The Australians’ batting collapsed, and the Englishmen won by 10 runs. Intense excitement prevails in the city over the result, which came as a thunderclap. General public refrained attending the conclusion of the game, confident that the match would result in an easy win for the Colonials.
