Miss A. Schroeder left by steamer today to join her mother, Mrs Schroeder being, we regret to hear, indisposed through some affection of the leg. The road out of the Conway on to the Whale's-back has been so much damaged, through rain on Thursday, as to render it impassable for wheel traffic ; further reference to tbe matter will be found ou page 6.

There was a bare quorum at tbe County Council meeting on Saturday several members being busy hay making, etc.— and the proceedings were shorter than usual.

The formal opening of the Dairy Factory takes place on Thursday afternoon. Shareholders and tbe public are invited to meet at the Factory immediately after half past three o’clock.

The ‘Christmas Tree’ and ‘Jumble Sale ’ on Christmas eve—Monday next, in tbe Town Hall—is iu some respects a novel form of amusement, here. As the management is in capable hands, the entertainment should give entire satisfaction. The following Superintendent Collectors of Agricultural Statistics have been appointed. —Mr G Robinson, of Blenheim, for Sounds, Marlborough, Kaikoura and adjacent islands ; Mr W G Walker, Christchurch, for Amuri, Cheviot, Ashley, Sehvyn, Akaroa, Ashburton and adjacent islands.

The programme to be presented by the Dramatic Society on Boxing night is published in this issue. The Secretary (Mr A. Maxton) has been fortunate in securing the assistance of a number of the leading musicians of the place : the stage manager (Mr Stubbersfield) is putting on a capital 4-act drama, which is being well rehearsed, and promises thoroughly appreciative representation.

Barney Riley nearly went to Davy Jones's locker this morning. He was sailing up from bis place in a boat about five o’clock when a heavy south-easterly wind came up, and in a trice his craft turned turtle with him, or something of the sort. At any rate he had to swim for it, and just managed to land in the breakers. The whole of the contents of the old fellow’s boat—clothes, watch, and other things—were lost. The Post of tbe 19th has tbe following : —A large number of the Wellington Navals assembled at tic National Hotel ou Saturday evening to bid farewell to Seaman 11. Cole, who is leaving tbe company,

to start fanning. Lieut Hume was iu the chair, and in making a presentation wished Seaman Cole every success in his new sphere. He mentioned that the Navels were not only losing one of their best volunteers, but certainly one of tbe most genial and popular meu in the corps. In thanking bis comrades, Seaman Cole said he could not find words to express his feelings, but the happiest days he had bad in bis life were those he had spent with those present. Several speeches and songs were given during tbe evening by C P O’s Armstrong, Woodger, and Palethorpe, Seamen Cole, France, Broomball, Fredericks, and others, Tbe presentation took the form of a very handsome gold locket engraved as follows:—‘Presented to Seaman H, Cole, from W N A V, 8/12/94.’
