Workers’ Union.

A meeting of the Kaikoura Branch was held on Saturday evening, the Vice-Chairman (Mr Renner) presiding.

Correspondence was read from the Secretary of the Canterbury Progressive Liberal Association regarding measures now before Parliament.

The Branch generally supported the views of the P. L. A.

Mr Meredith forwarded a copy of the Hon. Major Steward’s Shearers’ Accommodation Bill.

After consideration it was agreed that the Bill was defective in not prescribing what was sufficient accommodation, and it was resolved, That Mr Meredith be written to, the Secretary pointing out that ‘ proper and sufficient accommodation (in clause G) should be clearly defined, showing the minimum sleeping space that must be provided each individual ‘ shearer,’ and also the accommodation for the general convenience of * shearers.’—This latter refers to men being required in some cases to take meals in the sleeping apartment.

It was agreed that Mr Meredith be written to and asked if he is aware whether Government purpose abolishing' the lease in perpetuity' system. Mr O’Brien, Secy, to the Union, wrote on various matters concerning labour—providing relief works for unemployed, on the broad ground of humanity and also furnished a lengthy monthly report. Copies of the report of the Conference of Delegates were received, and portions discussed. The Secy, to write asking when Bye Laws for government of Branches may be expected. The Branch adjourned until receipt thereof.
