Letter received from one of pioneers of ‘New Australian’ settlement in Paraguay, in which the writer draws a doleful picture of condition of Lane’s party, who left the settlement. The trouble, it appears, arose because a second batch of immigrants wished to depart from the constitution. Writer considers second batch are making a tool of Kidd, and that further trouble is likely to arise. Governor took up similar position to that of Lord Glasgow with respect to Legislative appointments. After Dibbs had resigned the Governor asked who the Premier advised should be sent for, latter replied that he could not give any advice. His Excellency then, on his own initiative, sent for Reid. Amongst those whom the Premier wished to appoint to the Council was Barton, but latter declined.
