Leading matter, local and other items held over. The Colonial Treasurer is to deliver the Financial Statement this evening. Report of Saturday’s Council proceedings on page 6 ; also Football notes. Mr Meredith has been on the sick list, necessitating leave of absence, but he is now recovering.
The following sections in the Mt Fyffe Survey District, Block V., have been get apart for village settlement purposes, and are declared open for lease :—Sections 1 to 20, 20 acres; and sections 21 to 32, 12 acres 2 roods 22 perches. “ Mr Stringer for plaintiffs, Mr Joynt, instructed by Mr Mclver, for defendant,” means an interesting case in Sweeney and Monk v Bell, before Mr Bishop, S.M., to-morrow.
Mr Buick voted in favour of and Mr Meredith against women being endowed with political rights, that is to be placed on a political equality with men, enabling them to enter Parliament if they so desire. Mr Buick is true to his colours.
The Premier’s promised Bill to amend the Licensing Law of the Colony is to be a consolidating measure of, it is stated, no less than 200 clauses Absurd! Better wipe out the whole of the existing statutes and bring in a short, workable Bill containing provisions suggested by the experience gained.
The Suburban School Committee received five tenders for works on the School grounds, as follows:—J. Harris, £2 : 10s for levelling, and Is per yard for gravelling (accepted): M. Yaxlay, £2 15s and Is 6d ; D. Boyd, £3 and Is; Whitlow, £3 and Is; A. Clemett, £3: 10s and Is.
The Wellington Evening Press, which is a consistent advocate and supporter of the Tempeiance cause, speaks against the manner in which the Legislature interferes in matters which should either be left alone, or treated differently. It adds: ‘ Sir Robert Stout does much to destroy his own usefulness, by meddling with matters that he knows nothing about.’ Great Scott! Wbat a storm in a teapot would have been raised locally had the Stab said anything half as seyere about Sir Robert.
