FOOTBALL.

[By

There can be no doubt that the Waiau challenge has put increased life into local players, as yesterday’s, and the previous Thursday's, muster clearly proves.

A scratch match was played yesterday. sides being- chosen by A. Davidson (captain) and D. Haswell. The game resulted in a win for the former’s side by 17 points (1 goal and 4 tries) to 4 (a potted goal). The play throughout was not of a first class order. The forwards were very slow in forming ‘scrums'and ‘lining out,’ while the back play at times was not bv any means good. This is evidence of want of thorough practice, which is of far more value when training than are scratch matches. However, it is to be hoped that the reps, will show better form tomorrow.

My knowledge of the Waiau team is very limited, bnt I hear that ‘ Dick ’ Whittle, who was an old Kaikoura Town School boy, is to captain them, and that Lecouq, who has played for Waiau against Kaikoura several times, is also one of their number. Lecouq, if I remember rightly, proved rather smart, too. It is said that the visitors are, taken as a whole, a fairly heavy team, with some real hummers.

If the story is true that ‘Dick’ Whittle is to captain the visitors it will be rather a coincidence to see two ex-school mates leading the respective teams, as ‘ Brown’ Davidson is to captain the home ‘ boys.’ To continue this phase of the forthcoming contest, it is also worthy of note that another ex-pupil of the Kaikoura Town School—Fk. Flower—is likely to act as referee.

It is reported that Hapi is arranging a team—mostly composed of bushmeu —to play the Club. Well done Hapi !

A funny thing happened at a junior football match at Woodville recently. The ball was rolling across the field near the Woodville goal line and a local man attempted to kick it. He missed his mark somewhat, for the side of his foot struck the ball and it went clean over his own goal posts. The other side appealed for a goal, and the funniest thing of it all was that the referee gave it to them. The team selected to represent Kaikoura is as follows : Full-back : J. Washington. Three-quarters : D. Haswell, A. Davidson (captain), A. Maxton. Halves: F. Ritchie, E. Prince. Forwards: P. Morris, F. Cox, J. Veitch, J. Sutherland, Fk. Renner, A. Gray, J. Mclnnes, Starkey, Turnbull. ‘ Oval ’ takes exception to the places assigned to some of the men, but it would not do any good now to make comment thereon.
