PARLIAMENTARY.

In the House, on Tuesday, it was decided to permit the sale of liquor in Bellamy’s this session.

In Committee good progress was made with Standing Orders. Progress was reported at Clause/9. The Legislative Council is likely to adjourn for a week, having nothing to do.

In House, Wednesday, Stout moved to set up Committee to enquire how clause 21 of Alcoholic Liquors Bill was made retrospective, and what amendment was necessary and whether amendment should be made retrospective. Stout said it was not a party move, but Seddon said the motion contained as direct an attack on the Govt as ever was made in the House. Motion lost by 39 to 19.

Criminal Code Act Amendment Act read second time. Newman’s Bill to admit women to General Assembly read second time on casting- vote of Speaker. Importation or Manufacture of Intoxicating Liquors Prohibition Bill thrown out by 39 to 12, on motion for second reading. Gaming Bill discussed in Committee in Representatives last night—Thursday. An amendment abolishing totalisator was lost by 32 to 24. A clause limiting issue of totalisator licenses was amended so as to provide that the number issued shall not exceed twotliirds of the number allowed in racing year of 1893-94. Colonial Secretary is to decide how reduction shall be effected.

Debate on second reading-of Institute of Journalists Bill adjourned. Bill abolishing special juries read second time in Council.
