THE KAIKOURA STAR. KAIKOURA, JULY 13, 1894.

Mr Lloyd, dentist, arrived here on Wednesday. He remains and can be consulted until the Ist of next month, leaving for Blenheim, by coach, on Thursday the 2nd.

In the early part of the week the snow was about a foot deep, in the open, on the Gn en Hills ; drifts were, of course, much deeper—over a man’s head, said one recounter of the state of affairs.

The Waiaa Footballers are evidently, not easily daunted, as despite the wretched weather they got through just as we go to press. They put up at the Club. The match commences tomorrow at 3 o’clock sharp ; and a dance is to be held in the evening. A heavier downpour of rain has not been experienced in the district for a verylong time. Residents state that thengrounds were flooded in a manner they have no previous recollection of. One piece of jocosity current is that the water was so deep, for a short time, in Mr Gray’s smithy that bars of iron were seen floating about. The statement made at last week’s meeting of the Town School Committee regarding the Head Master’s salary is slightly incorrect. Under the new scale he will sustain a permanent loss of 2s per head on the average attendance. Old ‘Johnny Cooper’ accidentally fell into a ditch last week, and would have been drowned but for the timely discovery of his plight by Mr Maurice Harnett, who with Mr Gcrnind did the ‘Good Samaritan ’ in a thorough manner, ministering to the old man’s comfort.

Doughal McCallum got through with the North mails by midday on Wednesday, after a very rough and rather risky journey. Young Creed got through from Waiau last evening with the wayside mails, those from Christchurch having been sent back. He found the snow feet deep, in places, along the road. Notification is made respecting the benefit entertainment (for Mrs Templeman) next Thursday. In the first part a number of the leading musicians of the place will assist, and the performance will conclude with a very good drama, in two acts, ft is a capital programmme, and deserves a bumper house.

The ‘ cow-boys exhibition tomorrow. ‘ Proteus' has got hold of a story about a Member of the House of Representatives who fell into the sea in Wellington harbour, in the ‘ wee sma’ ’ hours, and was fished out by a couple of the crew of a cobier. The generous (?) M.11.R. rewarded his rescuers next day with a few silver coins each. The question on the wharf is : ‘ What price a member of the House of Reps. ?’ Last week we briefly answered a querist regarding the payment of license fees. Since then the whole matter has been cleared up, and it turns out that we have been absolutely right throughout. The Crown Law officer states that no change has been made in the law regarding such fees, which should, as heretofore, be paid to the local bodies in which the licensed premises are situate. Will those who opposed us on the question now own that they were mistaken ? Will they admit that they wronged us in asserting that our object was to mislead the public, hoping that by such deception we would gain votes for the Moderates in the Licensing election.
