Whale’s-back Road.
On Friday evening Mr R. Meredith, M.H.R., telegraphed us as follows, from Wellington : Mr Renner, Kaikoura.
He stoppage on Waiau-Kaikoura road. Brought the question before House, and pointed out the great inconvience and annoyance to Kaikoura. Minister now in communication with Amuri County Council, and if road is not attended to by Council Government will have the work done at expense of Council,
R. Meredith Wellington. We are pleased to find that Mr Meredith has been able to stir up the ‘ powers that be.’ Well would it be were it to lead to the Government making provision for the maintenance of this”as well as for all arterial roads necessary for the nninterrupted preservance of mail communication. It is hardly fair to ask local bodies to do such work over a long stretch of road through rough country. The cost should be a charge on Colonial revenue until railway communication is provided. The Amuri County Council has not, perhaps, done all that it might, or should, have done between Waian and the Conway, but it can claim that in other parts of the Colony main coach roads are kept in order by the General Government.
The present mail contractor (Mr Creed) deserves a bonus, or some gratuity, for the loss he is sustaining through the state of road preventing him running his coach, necessitating mails beings ‘ packed ’ through, with the assistauce of extra labour-
