In the House, Tuesday : Companies Accounts Amendment Bill, Auctioneers Act Amendment Bill and Hawkers and Pedlars Bill read second time. Bill abolishing imprisonment for debt further discussed, but debate again adjourned, Bill being opposed by several Govt supporters. Bill closing abandoned Taonui branch railway of line, near Palmerston North, read second time. Gaming and Lotteries Act Amendment Bill, Criminial Code Act Amendment Bill, and Printers and Newspapers Registration Amendment Bill read second time in Council.
Sir Patrick Buckley is reported to be dangerously ill of inflamation of the kidneys. Several Members are suffering from influenza, which is very prevalent just now.
Factories Bill, consolidating existing factory legislation and introducing certain new provisions regarding sweating, read second time in House of Representatives last night. Distress Rent Abolition Bill and Public Works Bill also read second time.
Interesting debate took place on Stout’s Bill dealing with gambling. Second reading agreed to. Motion proposed by W. Hutchison for abolution of totalizator did not reach the vote.
Conspiracy Law Amended Bill, Poisons Importation and Carriage Bill, and Arms Act Repeal Bill read second time in Legislative Council. WELLINGTON, July 4
The Financial Statement, which was ready for delivery before the Banking crisis, will have to be recast in consequence.
Reeves and Buckley are laid up with influenza.
Ward, who was taken ill on Saturday morning, is improving, but will not be able to get about for another week. House Wednesday : Replying to Russell, the Premier said Col. Fox was neither performing duties of Commandant nor receiving any salary. He had terminated his agreement on the sth May, since then he had declined to accept any salary. It bad been found that the engagement was not binding on either side, so Govt were considering offer from Fox for re engagement on defined lines. Part of Fox's recommendations re Harbor Defences were being carried out.
Abattoirs and Slaughterhouses Bill read second time.
Motion by Major Harris for abolition of the sale of beer, wine and spirits in Bellamy’s caused considerable discussion, and was carried by 27 to 23. House rose at midnight.
