AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

Sydney : Sir T. M'llwraith, interviewed on return from England and America, appears to be impressed, by his American experience, with hopelessness of attempt to develop country satisfactorily under Govt railway management. He declines, however, to reveal his new railway policy till he lays it before his colleagues. There is, he says, abundance of unemployed capital in London seeking investment at very low interest, but it will not be lent as inscribed stock because new issues would again demoralise colonial stock market. Cardinal feature of any railway policy must be ear-marking of securities for loans to be raised in future.

Barton, addressing electors, said he did not agree with Premier’s plan, which was not federation but rather unification.

MELBOURNE, June 11

Report of two delegates sent to India by Victorian Govt to investigate trade prospects is somewhat discouraging. It would be useless, they report, to attempt to introduce frozen meat into India, unless proper provision is made for cool storage. Demand for the best quality of meat is small, principle business being done with the medium (?) article. With regard to supplying the Army, the delegates found fresh meat could be obtained locally at much less cost locally than frozen article could be supplied at.
