Licensing Matters.
WELLINGTON, June 6
Napier : Committe granted all applications for renewals with one exception, which was postponed for a month to enable a report to be made as to the condition of the house. The police report was favourable in each case. Invercargill : At the annual licensing meeting, the Committee reduced the number of licenses to the full extent allowed. Dunedin: 45 applications granted to 10 o’clock licenses ; 42 adjourned to 12th inst. Port Chalmers : All licensee granted except 4, which have been adjourned till 14th inst. Christchurch : 12 licenses refused, all other hotels to which licenses have been granted to be closed at 10 o’clock. Ashley Licensing. AMBERLEY, June 5 At the Ashley Licensing Committee meeting all licenses were renewed, with exception of Whittle’s (Waiau) and Lakes (Amberley). The latter will be granted licenses conditionally that new landlords be obtained within 3 months. Several of renewals are subject to minor improvements in houses. The Committee emphasised necessity for strict observance of the law regarding Sunday trading and late hours. Application for a license for Cheviot was refused, the Committee holding
that it had not the power to grant such, and intimating their unwillingness, under any circumstances, to the issue at present of a license.
