Gentleman named Samuels, addressing a meeting, stated after survey the find disclosed 20.000,000 tons of stone, and lie offered to forfeit £5OO to any charitable institution if any man failed to get a' prospect from dish of stuff. Officials of Survey Dept think the man’s story is worthy of some credence. SYDNEY, May 18
Charges brought by Griffiths, of Queensland, against Missionaries of New Hebrides investigated by Presbyterian Synod. Charges were in connection with illegal trading and other unfair practices. The Synod held whole charges groundless, and deprecated action of high officer of State making such accusation without full enquiry. Thurston also enquired into matter with results satisfactory to Missionaries. MELBOURNE, May 19 Sufficient progress made by Tariff Commission to enable accurate forecast to be published regarding recommendations which will he included in report to be furnished to Govt. Commission considers all duties have been raised to point which should not be exceeded, and in many instances reduction should be made. Future legislation should be directed towards modification of fiscal system, and it is suggested that the ad valorem system should be applied to the cattle and sheep duties, while horses and pigs should be admitted free. The tariff on textile fabrics should be lowered and primage duty removed, on ground of interference with colonial trade. SYDNEY May 18 The mysterious stone throwing on residences situated in Charles street, Enmore, which has been going on for some time, much in the same manner as the mystery in the Maclean district about 12 or 14 months ago, has been elucidated. It turns out that a girl, aged 12, a servant in one of the two houses attacked, is the culprit. She was detected in the act.
Delegates to represent various Australasian colonies at Canadian Tariff Conference next month have been entertained at several festivities during week. They left for Vancouver by the Huddart-Parker steamer Arawa this morning. ADELAIDE, May 19
At Wesleyan Conference motion in favour of union of Methodist Churches throughout Australia was carried by 101 to 14. Committee appointed to report on basis of union. Considerable feeling exhibited throughout debate. Proceedings were at times of a noisy character.
HOBART, May 19 Premier replied to Seddon stating that Agent-General for Tasmania has been instructed to cooperate with other Agents-General in supporting New Zealand’s representation in regard to Samoa.
Govt Geologist despatched to scene of new gold discovery near Mount Lyell. Practical prospectors state the existence of large gold bearing reefs in that locality has been known for some time, and prospects gave about three pennyweights to ton. They think find might be payable if worked on very large scale.
