‘New Australia.’
SYDNEY, May 18 Further telegram received from New Australia announces that Lane, former Administrator, has with him 47 men, some with families, agreed to start an independent colony, close to original site.
Perfectly friendly agreement, it is said, was arrived at between Lane and new authorities as to the land and conditions.
The reason for course now proposed lies in fact that Lane and those immediately connected with him strongly insisted on necessity of much higher standard of morality being recognised, while others considered it was unnecessary. It has been agreed to keep together until new constitution proclaims Lane and others free to leave original settlement.
Trustees in Australia have given notice of their intention to join Lane as soon as plans are fulfilled.
