ADELAIDE, May 17 At Wesleyan Conference, the Rev. Williams, of N. Z., stated that womanhood suffrage bad given liquor trade such a severe shock in N. Z. that retail business was not worth more than six years’ purchase.
SIDNEY, May 14 During certain military manoouvres at Newcastle, on Saturday, one of the hydropneumatic guns was ruined, involving a loss of between £4OOO and £5OOO. It appears almost a miracle that similar calamity to that on board H.M.S. Cordelia did not occur. It is believed the shot carried away whole rifling of gun, and that missile very nearly jammed in the barrel. HOBART, May 17 Tasmanian Budget shows surplus of £6OOO. Next year's revenue expected to produce surplus of £28,000. Heavy retrenchment is to be made in Civil service. Ministers salaries will be reduced from £7OO to £6OO. Duties are to be increased. Bill will be introduced imposing tax on unimproved value of land.
MELBOURNE, May 17 Premier received cable message from Seddon requesting cooperation of Victoria in opposing suggestion that Britain should control Tonga, leaving Samoa to Germany. Patterson replied concurring in stand taken by Seddon.
