Cable and Mails
LONDON, Jan 24 Lord Ripon, Secretary of State for Colonies, yielding to pressure from Huddart, has undertaken to first consider question of subsidy on behalf of Fiji in connection with proposed Pacific cable. Agents General and Sir C. Tupper, along with Huddart, asked Marquis of Ripon, Secretary of State for Colonies, to grant subsidy to Huddart, Parker & Co’s mail steamers. Huddart argued that line was important assistance to Foreign Office policy, and afforded valuable additional protection to the British Nation. Ripon expressed his sympathy, and undertook to consult Foreign Office, which was chiefly concerned in the matter.
